Dental Procedures
- Wisdom Teeth Removal:
- Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars are the last teeth to erupt in your mouth. This generally occurs between the ages of 17 and 25. In general you should not wait until your wisdom teeth give you discomfort to remove them. The earlier you remove your wisdom teeth, the less chance of complications. The AAOMS recommends removal of wisdom teeth by the time a patient is a young adult to prevent future problems and to promote proper healing.
- Dental Implants:
Dental implants are metal posts that work as a substitute for a real tooth root. The metal posts are placed in the bone under the gum where a tooth is missing. The bone will then heal around the metal post and a crown can then be placed on the post making this implant look like your natural tooth.
Implants help retain bone that would otherwise be lost because of a phenomenon called bone resorption. When a root is missing the bone will basically deteriorate because there is no root to hold the bone in place. When an implant is placed, the bone adheres to the implant and will not deteriorate which allows the implant to act as a strong foundation for biting and chewing. Dental implants may also be used to secure bridges and dentures when more than one tooth is missing.
- TMJ:
- TMJ actually stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the name of the joint located in the front of the ear where the skull and lower jaw meet. Many people suffer from temporomandibular disorders and chronic facial pain in or around the ear, tenderness of the jaw, clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth, or even headaches and neck aches. These symptoms could be a sign of a toothache, sinus infection, or an early stage of periodontal disease. Sometimes the pain is related to the facial muscles and the temporomandibular joint. Treatment options may include stress reducing exercises, muscle relaxants, and wearing a mouth protector to prevent teeth grinding.
- Lesions and Pathology:
- Early detection of oral cancer will help increase the chance for a cure. High risk individuals are strongly urged to have an oral exam performed by either your general dentist or an oral surgeon. You are considered high risk if you smoke, consume alcohol, or use smokeless tobacco. If the doctor finds any suspicious areas in your mouth, a biopsy will be taken of the area for further lab testing. If you discover any suspicious areas such as lumps or sores, make an appointment for an exam with the doctor.
Cosmetic Procedures
- Botox:
- Botox is a simple non-surgical injection that can temporarily reduce the signs of aging by reducing the muscle activity and wrinkles of the eyebrow and forehead. It is most effective in people ages 18-65. Botox Cosmetic is the only treatment of its kind to be approved by the FDA. Results can last up to 4 months.
- Juvaderm:
- Juvaderm is a smooth gel that is injected just below the surface of the skin to restore the skin’s volume. It is commonly used to reduce the deep wrinkles that form creases from the bottom of your nose to the sides of your mouth. These areas that can be reduced are often called “smile lines” or your “parenthesis”. You can see results immediately and they can last for up to a year. You may need supplemental touch up treatments to achieve maximum results.
- Laser Skin Resurfacing:
- Using a special laser, the doctor can remove outer layers of damaged or wrinkled skin. The new skin will appear healthier and smoother. This treatment is effective in removing fine lines around the eyes and mouth and also small scars or uneven pigmentation of the skin. The laser can be applied to the entire face, or to specific regions of the face.
- Chemical Skin Resurfacing:
- Chemical skin resurfacing, also known as a chemical peel, is a process where a chemical solution is applied to the face to improve the texture of the skin. Chemical peels also help with facial blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation.
